What I Would Do If I Were To Start A Blog In 2026

Starting a blog in 2026 is quite different from how it used to be years ago. I remember when I started one of my blogs that eventually failed—or did it really fail? Yes, it did, but not because the blog itself was bad. It failed because I was inexperienced at the time. I didn’t know the right things to do, so I carelessly let that promising blog go to waste.

In reality, the blog didn’t fail—I did. I allowed the domain name to expire without renewing it.

The blog had already started gaining traction before the domain expired. The reason I let it go was because I wasn’t making any money from it at the time. As a beginner, I believed I would never make money from blogging. Whenever I think about that blog now, I feel bad because it was a golden opportunity to make real money. It could have become one of the top blogs we see today if I had kept it.

Back then, although the Google sandbox effect was still in place, once I got out of it, the traffic growth was rapid. I started the blog around August 2016, and from then until May 2017, I had zero traffic in my analytics. There was no traffic at all, but I kept pushing, believing that one day I would start getting visitors.

And I was right.

After May 2017, the blog started getting traffic. From June to August, I had already gained almost 400 subscribers. If it were today, I don’t think I would grow that quickly. However, what frustrated me was that even with that growth, I didn’t make a single affiliate sale. I also didn’t know how to install AdSense on WordPress, so it became very frustrating, and I eventually let it go.

What I Did Before My Blog Started Getting Traffic

One of the turning points was when I came across a plugin called All-in-One SEO. I used it to optimize the blog posts that were already on my site, and after a few weeks, my blog started getting initial traction.

Things really took off when I added a forum to the blog. At that time, I thought the blog itself would make me money. I didn’t realize that a blog without a business model generates zero revenue—a mistake many beginners still make today.

If you’re a beginner, understand this: a blog alone cannot make you money. It’s the business you run on the blog that brings income.

A blog is simply a platform where you connect with your audience, who can later become your customers if you nurture them well. Despite having all those subscribers, I didn’t promote a single product to them. I completely wasted that opportunity.

Is Blogging Dead?

Is blogging dead or alive?

I would say blogging is not dead because many people are still making good money from it. However, the truth is that making money from blogging now requires a different approach.

To succeed in blogging today, you need to be strategic, work harder, and be patient. Without these, blogging will feel “dead” to you.

Some top blogs that made huge income before Google’s algorithm updates are no longer visible today. So, blogging is dead for those who don’t know how to adapt. On the other hand, it is still very much alive for those who understand the new system and adjust accordingly.

If I Were To Start a Blog in 2026, What I Would Do?

1. Choose a Niche

The first thing I would do is choose a niche—my area of specialization.

A niche is the specific topic you are knowledgeable about and can consistently create content around. It should be something you can confidently write about and answer questions on.

Blogging has shifted from a broad approach to a focused one. If you try to cover everything, you are setting yourself up for failure. Google now rewards expertise and authority. If you are not seen as an authority in a specific niche, your content will struggle to rank.

Also, user behavior has changed. If people don’t see you as an expert, they won’t trust you—and if they don’t trust you, they won’t buy from you.

2. Register a Domain and Hosting

Next, I would register a domain name and choose a hosting provider. Some popular options include Bluehost, HostGator, Hostinger, and GoDaddy.

I prefer Bluehost because I’ve used it before, and they offer a free domain when you purchase hosting. Hostinger is also a great option with affordable pricing. GoDaddy is good too, but their renewal fees can be quite high.

3. Choose a Platform

After setting up the blog, I would choose a platform to connect with my audience:

  • A Blog – Ideal if you enjoy writing

  • YouTube Channel – Great if you’re comfortable on camera

  • Social Media – Platforms like Facebook, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, and Instagram

4. Create Content

The next step is content creation within my niche.

What is a Keyword?

A keyword is a topic or phrase that people are already searching for online. By researching keywords, you understand your audience’s problems and create content that solves them.

I would use tools like Google Keyword Planner (free), Ahrefs, or SEMrush.

Content formats can include:

  • Blog posts

  • Videos

  • Social media posts

  • Threads

5. Promote Your Content

After creating about 20 pieces of content, I would start promoting them using:

  • Social media (X, Instagram, Pinterest)

  • Guest posting

  • Platforms like Medium and Quora

  • Communities like Reddit and forums

I would also build backlinks by collaborating with other bloggers in my niche.

6. Be Patient

Blogging takes time. It is not a one-week or one-month process. It can take months or even years before you start seeing meaningful results.

7. Monetization

Once I start getting traction, I would monetize the blog using:

  • Affiliate marketing

  • Sponsored posts

At the early stage, I would avoid ads because low traffic won’t generate much income, and ads can slow down growth.

Final Thoughts

These are the steps I would follow if I were starting a blog in 2026. Blogging is not dead, but it requires the right strategy, consistency, and patience.
